Rich guys are definitely part of the story - Morgan, Hearst, etc. were buying shiny fabulous books - but there was also a movement in the early 20th c. to make manuscripts "affordable" for regular folks by cutting them up and selling the pages off one by one. Seriously, that was a thing. Still is. 😠

George Luks began producing a competing version of the Yellow Kid on October 11, 1896, following Richard Outcault's move from Pulitzer to Hearst papers. (Shown here is the first Luks Yellow Kid page.) We ran a story on Luks’s life and career, and it’s on our site: www.hoganmag.com/blog/george-...

That site has a long record of adverse coverage of the Resistance in Lebanon and anything related to Iran. I haven't read them for months now. It's owned by a British man named Hearst. Good luck with that.

The Writers Guild of America East and our Hearst Union members maintain that generative artificial intelligence is theft and is a mandatory subject of bargaining. We will not stop fighting to protect our members' work and livelihood from this existential threat.

This week, Hearst became the latest WGAE shop to strike a content deal with OpenAI. The threat OpenAI and other artificial intelligence tools pose to journalism and the public is inconceivable, especially given how these deals lack transparency about how Guild’s members work will be used to train AI models, generate plagiarized material or protect the intellectual property created by Guild members. It is abhorrent and irresponsible that media companies would trade in their credibility for quick cash at the same time numerous news organizations and writers are in litigation with OpenAi over these very issues.

In addition, these deals further contribute to AI’s dangerous environmental impact. We cannot ignore the severe consequences AI poses to furthering climate change.
