I walked into the barber’s the other day. It was staffed with twenty-somethings and modern hip-hop over the speakers. Receptionist looked at me, said “just a moment” and changed the song to Achey Breaky Heart.

Obviously it’s more complicated than that but I was a child. Anyway, I always saw hip hop as music to be taken seriously. I didn’t really get into it till college when a friend showed me around. But even as a pretentious goth teen who hated pop I never turned up my nose at hip hop.
I was a weird kid. I watched a lot of news. White media demonized hip hop as “violent”. Given my rather hippie musical heritage I could have fallen for that lazy analysis. But Chuck D knew how to explain things to the white liberal Dems (that was my context). I took that line to heart.
I think the parts of my broader aesthetics that help me access hip hop are either punk sensibilities and sonic minimalism or (on the opposite end) just genius sampling of soul music and other ornate musical forms. And politics. Chuck D saying this is “CNN for Black people” connected to me as a kid.
