Idk I think hyperpop was largely successful in the way any music genre is/was successful - it gets subsumed into the output of dominant acts and elevates those that produce its mostly palatable versions.
I'm sure this pitchfork piece has more info but to me the foundational problem of hyperpop is that 100 gecs fucking suck
to me i feel like if you could fuse a lot of underground genres that never really "broke out" in the mainstream like chiptune/tracker music with vaporwave and hyperpop there is a bigger chance for things to grow, i think atomization is contributing a lot to the hyper-insularity
