Firefighters union declines to endorse Harris or Trump https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/firefighters-union-iaff-declines-endorse-presidential-candidate-rcna173918 When did union leaders become such cowards? And it's the being a woman of color thing, then these unions deserve to die.
The IAFF took a *lot* of flack from the rank and file for endorsing Biden. I had several people tell me they straight up felt alienated because of it. But as you say, the rational self interest won out. But a *woman*? Of *color*!?
The International Association of Fire Fighters “has supported every Democratic candidate since 1960, minus Harris and Clinton—the only two women to ever appear at the top of the ticket for a major political party.” www.newsweek.com/iaff-under-f...
The firefighters union is facing criticisms for refusing to endorse a female presidential candidate yet again.
getting more than a little blackpilled that this apparently includes the leaderships of both the Teamsters and the IAFF, Matthew.
The national IAFF narrowly voted to not back either Presidential candidate. Local chapters, however, are likely to mostly endorse Harris. The IAFF has generally backed the Democratic candidate for President, but didn’t do so in 2016. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...
International Association of Fire Fighters vote by a margin of 1.2% to not back either White House candidate
Seeing this reflected in a Union I Hold Dear (The IAFF) is damned sad. "Sure Harris lines up 100% with our positions on Labor, Safety, Building Codes, Land Use, etc... but some of our dudes are REALLY into reactionary culture war stuff so, no endorsement from Harris"
Ed Kelly, president of the IAFF since 2021, is an old-school Boston firefighter—ie, the whitest public safety agency in Boston—from a long-time firefighting family. His Special Assistant, Mathew Golsteyn, is a former Green Beret accused of war crimes who was pardoned by Trump.
This should be something of a competition of which voting blocs can support the winning party the most. I don’t want to give former Republicans any opportunity to claim that they were the difference. Why would the IAFF?
For real, I am just embarrassed now that we have multiple instances of labor unrest ending (first rail and now dockworkers) because this administration knows how to win for labor. But instead of an IAFF endorsement, today’s news about someone stumping for Harris is fricking Liz Cheney.
Not feeling great about IAFF
