Geopolitics, ICANN rules and the upcoming disappearance of the "io" ccTLD 🌐
How geopolitics can alter digital infrastructure
And again, one of those days where one would wish we could just disconnect Ruzzia from the internet (which we can't because of ICANN).
Looks like NWSL Boston first came up with the "BOS Nation FC" idea over 10 months ago. BOSNation[dot]com was registered on December 4, 2023, and redirects to BOSNationFC[dot]com, which was registered 10 days later. (see screenshots) www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/...
6) the IGOs slapping ID on the wrist with a cooked noodle will replace it with an uncooked one and this + ICANN + a lawyer will convince ID to agree to either redelegate the .io domain or pay a portion equivalent to a goods & services tax to Mauritius or the Chagos Refugees Group [16/19]
3) in an unprecedented & rule-breaking move, ICANN will reclassify .io as a generic TLD (these must be a minimum of 3 characters long), preventing the use of the code for any ccTLD in the future, which is bad news for [checks notes] any Iowan separatists with big plans out there [13/19]
the thing about using domains as namespaces is you don't own your domain you're just leasing it from icann
This, 100%. It’s also an obvious opportunity for ICANN to get paid, and ICANN really, really likes getting paid.
This article is pretty speculative. There's no way that ICANN is going to let the .io domain just become defunct.
