Started reading Upton Sinclair’s Main Street and my god if I ever once in my life write something half as vivid as this opening I can die happy. 📚💙

CHAPTER I
I
ON A HILL BY THE MISSISSIPPI Where Chippewas* camped two generations ago, a girl stood in relief against the cornflower blue of northern sky.
She saw no Indians now: she saw flour mills and the blinking windows of skyscrapers in Minneapolis and St Paul. Nor was she thinking of squaws and portages," and the Yankee fur traders whose shadows were all about her. She was meditating upon walnut fudge, the plays of Brieux," the reasons why heels run over, and the fact that the chemistry instructor had stared at the new coiffure which concealed her ears.
A breeze which had crossed a thousand miles of wheatlands bellied her taffeta skirt in a line so graceful, so full of animation and moving beauty, that the heart of a chance watcher on the lower road tightened to wistfulness over her quality of suspended freedom. She lifted her arms, she leant back against the wind - her skirt dipped and flared, a lock blew wild. A girl on a hilltop - credulous, plastic, young, drinking the air as she longed to drink life. The eternal aching comedy of expectant youth.
It is Carol Milford, fleeing for an hour from Blodgett College.
The days of pioneering, of lassies in sun bonnets and bears killed with axes in piney clearings, are deader now than Camelot* - and a rebellious girl is the spirit of that bewildered empire called the American Middlewest.

For the major role of gift exchange in the relations between Native Americans and Europeans, see Richard White's 'The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815'.

It doesn't surprise me: Due to his hateful phrases against the indians in movies I've boycotted his roles

My very tentative assessment is that for the British, the Indian Penal Code was a transition point from slavery to colonialism. A move away from "Look, we are not enslaving Africans! We are civilizing Indians and, this time, we have LAWS, proper codes." A lie. An alibi.

I feel like he doesn't care because he knows he's India's chosen toadie. He even continued to be a guest of the now deported Indian high commissioner despite knowing the Indians carried out a murder on Canadian territory.

38000 days ago (October 2, 1920), HOLY S***, IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED. The Cleveland Indians win their first-ever pennant, nailing down the flag with a 10-1 win over the Tigers. It's Jim Bagby's 31st win of the season. This is the start of a dynasty. I can feel it. Just watch.

1920 headline in the Cleveland Press newspaper: "CLEVELAND WINS PENNANT"

Not on twitter cause I got rid of it a while ago but recently someone tried to tell me Native people were being "infantilized" by teaching that 1800s settlers were racist because "the indians were brutal and violent"
