Interesting. It's too bad TCM still has limited research in the West, because there are hints at efficacy here and there. Maybe the volatile oils or trace minerals in the herb have an entourage effect on the pu-erh.

Key TCM concepts behind Pu er Cha's properties

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),

Pu er Cha belongs to the 'Herbs that clear Heat and relieve Toxicity' category. Herbs in this category are used to clear inflammatory and infectious conditions, referred to as 'Internal Heat' in TCM. This is why most of the herbs in this category will have both antibacterial and antiviral properties. In TCM one has too much 'Internal Heat' in their body as a result of a deficiency of 'Yin' (which is Cold in nature, see our explanation on Yin and Yang) or, more commonly, an Excess of Yang (Hot in nature). Herbs that clear Heat and relieve Toxicity treat the latter while, at the same time, removing infectious toxins from the body. As such they tend to be Cold or Neutral in nature.
Research is still ongoing to investigate the components of different pu-erh teas. Ripened pu-erh tea contains musty-smelling methoxybenzenes as well as gallic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol, 11 whereas raw pu- erh tea contains more floral, woody-smelling terpene alcohols, ketones, and phenolic compounds. 12 Microorganisms, involved in the solid-state fermentation of pu-erh tea, have

[9] Additionally, it contains essential trace elements such as iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, which are necessary for human health. [9] The plant is rich in nutrients such as crude protein, crude fiber, and amino acids, with a high content of essential amino acids that meets the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization's recommended ratio.
