Locals say the wooden stature of gamekeeper Jack Radley is to give his spirit something to dwell in so that he can still keep poachers out of the woods. I'm not sure about that, but I can attest it bloody startles you if you come across it by torchlight.– #MattAdams

I've spent enough years in Hookland to not automatically laugh when someone says that behind an impressive door on the street, there's a secret society at work. More weird and occult organisations are headquartered in the county than should be legally allowed. – #MattAdams

Once you learn that the county emblem of a bear actually represents the Ghost Bear of Hookland legend, you become a little haunted by the knowledge. I'd hear I've heard it snuffling apples in the woods. I've even begun to glimpse it in shop windows. – #MattAdams#GhostBear

I've discovered a wonderful old Hookland dialect phrase - lane-shaken – which means the fear generated by walking a lane known to be haunted by spirits or plagued by sprites. – #MattAdams#Hookland#WOTD

There are those who believe in divination by boneyard lichen. Hooklanders call it tomb-blight telling. Charts to tomorrow in swirl and splotch. A thousand branchings to show the possible worlds stemming from the now. Of course, it's a difficult art to master. – #MattAdams, 1982

The Marsh Ape observation tower on Shrill's salt marsh has seen better days. I'd say it's been weather-cracked and wind-bullied. However, some locals and cryptid hunters claim it's been wrecked by the creature itself as it was unhappy at constantly being spied on. – #MattAdams

We managed to get passed the first two military cordons, but as we approached the original fence of the Space Research Centre, the headaches became too strong. I've never known four people be hit with simultaneous migraines. We had to get out of there. – #MattAdams, diary entry

Even on the brightest days, the driftwood and cockleshell crosses of Black Fathom faith chapels seem to cast strange shadows. You can't help but wonder if all the rumours about the cult are true. I'd go inside if I didn't know how they felt about non-believers. – #MattAdams, 1982

There are spots that have a dark gravity. You try to resist them, but they capture you in their orbit of their mysteries. You come back to them time and time again. Yet the years never bring you closer to understanding the shadows that dwell within them. – #MattAdams, 1981
