Plastic microfibers are the wall at which legislators frequently toss spaghetti - but the Fighting Fibers Act of 2024, which includes objectives like washing machine filtration, for which I've advocated for nearly a decade (because it just makes sense duh) just might stick.
Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley today introduced the Fighting Fibers Act of 2024 to address microfiber pollution from clothing. Scientists estimate millions of tons of…
Nice yea we use a lot of microfibers too.
It's a good thing to be aware of, though, and it's a complicated problem. Rayon/viscose/bamboo (that is, processed cellulose textiles) do release a lot of microfibers. Early information seems to indicate that they biodegrade better than polyester/nylon/acrylic microfibers. Not perfect, but useful.
It's like the microfibers they put in dip to lacerate your gums and help the nicotine absorb. Except the plastics go all the way in
I've switched to "waterless" car washes because we have strict water restrictions. And as long as you're burning through paper towels or microfibers "lifting" the dirt off rather than scratching it into the paint, it's a decent option for lightly filthy cars. Better for the environment, maybe?
fair! so far ive been insane enough to go out there and just copious detail spray and microfibers to remove the bugs, especially since with ppf im not sure high pressure spray is a good idea anymore 😭
Drying clothes in a dryer can release as much as 3.5 times as many plastic microfibers as washing does. If possible, it’s best to hang clothes and let them air dry.
This is not a necessity but if you have this available in your country it works on glass, floors, everything. We use this, and dish soap + vinegar mixed in a second bottle for hard water stains. The rest of my supplies are a medium duty sponge and scrub brush from the dollar store, + microfibers
