Noppera-bō are faceless yōkai that can impersonate humans. They often scare people by appearing normal at first, then revealing their featureless face. Their stories serve as cautionary tales about identity and trust. #NopperaBo#FacelessGhost#UrbanLegends

Nopperabo is a strange supernatural phenomenon from Japanese folklore. This yokai appears just like a normal human, but without a face. Its aim is to scare humans out of their wits. More here including clip from Pom Poko. www.curiousordinary.com/2023/01/nopp...

(Cont.) I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m harping but there’s a few more parts of these Nopperabo I want to highlight. The appearing/disappearing skeleton arms remind me of Slenderman’s tentacles and the markings on the neck are reminiscent of a tie. Also, the rib-like markings are cool

Another addition to my Curses thread from the other day. The nopperabo in this ep also have the ability to absorb things into their bodies. Yet another thing they have in common with Slenderman

Their nopperabo remind me of a cross between Mr. Burns from Tree House of Horror ep. and slender man.

(Cont.) Nopperabo tends to come up when talking about Slender Man as a way of making him sound more universal. It’s very possible that the writers/artists found out about nopperabo that way and that’s why their version looks like a ghostly Slender Man rather than random people without faces.

(Cont.) Misrepresenting nopperabo isn’t a huge deal but it does make me sad that American audiences could be missing out on the authentic flavor of Japanese folklore.

(Cont.) I haven’t finished it yet but I think Curses is a really cool show and def worth a watch. But how do I rate the nopperabo? Hmm. Well, shows that take inspiration from world folklore tend to take liberties to tell the story they want to tell and I did enjoy the episode so 👍 on that level. …

(cont.)The two girls in the painting for centuries have been able to ward off the nopperabo with ofuda that seem to simply say “Leave nopperabo!” I’m not sure if that “yo” should be something else or not be there at all
