capitalism has created hierarchies where there are cruel morons with infinite money to spend on guys like this & on media to both promote & launder the reputations of guys like this. no one stopped the formation of a hyper-rich oligarchy, which was the Alternate Win Condition for liberal democracy.

Duopoly is a form of oligopoly, and oligarchy isn't democracy. A ballot doesn't make a system automatically democratic.

Perfect! So, basically, due to gerrymandering, it's a failure of the system and not of the voters. It is in fact, authoritarian. An oligarchy to be specific.

In one sense, Rome was never destroyed. In another, Rome was destroyed because it fell to oligarchy. Rich, landed interests conspired to gain more control of government, more land. Common men (soldiers in particular) were cheated out of their share by loopholes favoring the rich and outright theft.
