It reminds me of the misunderstandings about Papuan ritualistic cannibalism. Papuans practised cannibalism as a way to honour their dead. They didn’t kidnap random people to eat them. (The cannibalism has been discouraged for health reasons, but it didn’t resemble the stereotypes westerners had)
In material terms Trump's is much worse because there isn't a significant Papuan American population. But at heart it stems from the same casual racism.
