I have no idea why you appear so eager to misunderstand an obvious joke made by someone who’s been examining PhDs for more than two decades, but just to be clear - I wouldn’t dream of doubting your competence.
The bias is pretty overwhelming. Back when Natl Academy folks were saing we were producing too many PhDs, I tried to point out outputs other than faculty positions for grads. It always amazed me when biochemists didn’t bother to write the full equation. A degree is a ticket. Do something you love. 🧪
Yeah the real justification for it is that although there are a few academics minimizing it (with clear biases) there are thousands more who are not. One can always find some phds to back any sort of crazy opinion(like climate change denial). Their mere existence is not evidence of anything.

I can't believe how fucked everything is. I've had the great pleasure of seeing a lot of my friends over the last two weeks, which due distance doesn't happen often. What's striking is how my friends with the most qualifications (phds) are struggling to find permanent work and safe, secure housing.

Agreed, this data is an aperture, but it is far from the full picture. I'm mostly trying to caution against an over-optimistic of this data. I've seen too many cases of PhDs leaving academic only to find limited employment options below their skill level (which will vary across fields).
