I've figured the Nintendo/Palworld patent suit out: A while before Palworld was released, modders dismantled a few Pokemon games and extracted some animations and the animation system from them. They released them semi-publicly, so that other modders could use them for mods and romhacks. 1/

I played this through a couple of years ago while getting deep onto NES romhacks and had a really good time with it, so very much recommend it. It's available as a cart from various sites.

Honestly it was a blessing I even stumbled into what I now consider my favorite series of games by a dev, and two of them are romhacks that I just think are really really impressive, the other just hitting me in a vulnerable time that resonated so strongly with me.

all i know is they're good for holding a rom for one game and lots of romhacks of it, in one file.
