I didn’t approach her yet, just waited outside the door where I could observe, unseen. She kept shifting her weight, tucking her curls behind her ears over and over.

When she checked her watch once again, I decided it was time to put up or shut up and pushed through the door. “All right! Let’s do this.”

She jumped, eyes startled and wide, but only for a second. Without missing a beat, she relaxed her shoulders and shot me a sly smile. “I wasn’t sure you would show.”

“And miss a chance to call your bluff? To kiss you until your knees buckle?” I locked my gaze on her green eyes and drew closer, projecting a calmness I sure as shit didn’t feel. When I was only inches away, I leaned close and brushed my lips across her cheek. “You won’t go through with it.”

Then she was pressed against me, snaking her arms around my neck. “Try me.”

Listening to Aidan’s soft, measured breath, she knew this was her chance to slip out without any lies and promises that they’d call each other and maybe go out on a real date.

That wasn’t what this was.

While Gemma was tempted to crawl back under the covers and start the day the way they’d ended last night, she knew it would be best to make a clean break. He’d be gone in a few days anyway, and they’d never see each other again. The last thing she needed - or wanted - was to get entangled in romantic expectations and hurt feelings.

“Hold on. You cheated on Jamie?” Chris turned me toward him. “When? Who?”

Was he serious? “You, Chris. We kissed? You were there.”

“That?” He rolled his eyes. “Jesus, I thought you actually slept with someone.”

“It shouldn’t have happened.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “If it wasn’t cheating, then what was it?”

“Lexi, it was a moment, that’s all.” Chris cupped my cheek, and it was hard not to lean into his touch. “A moment between two people with a shared past, needing to feel something good, if only for a little while.”

I groaned. “Stop doing that!”

"Doing what?"

"Saying the right thing! Saying exactly what I need to hear to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I need you to be an asshole and you are failing abysmally."

He held her in the rain, silently stroking her hair as she cried. There was no attempt to make her go inside, no shushing her or insisting that she explain her tears. It wasn’t necessary with Aidan. No matter the ‘why’, she knew he was there for her.

Gemma sniffled. “I’m getting snot all over you.”

He just laughed, and she let the rich sound vibrate through her.

“Good thing I hate this shirt.”

“Hey!” She glared up at him. “I gave you that shirt!”

With both hands, he smoothed back her wet hair, cupping her cheeks. “Well, that tells you how much you mean to me that I would wear this hideous thing in public.”
