The organisers of the #SERE2024 preconference tour were pulling out all stops to surprise us during the visit to the 'Life to Alvars' project. Turns out restored alvar grassland is a great stage for accordion music ☺️.

Just some of the botanical hightlights on day 2 of our #SERE2024 preconference tour, including carline thistle Carlina vulgaris and maidenhair spleenwort Asplenium trichomanes in alvar grassland, and bird's-eye primrose Primula farinosa in a calcareous flush in fen grassland.

It was also vrey interesting to hear from Bert Holm about wooded meadow restoration on the island of Saaremaa and elsewhere in Estonia on day 2 of our #SERE2024 preconference tour.

Very nice ts see the award-winning Life To Alvars project on the island of Muhu on day 2 of our #SERE2024 preconference trip and learning from Annely Holm about the great work done there. Also impressive to see the difference between land inside the project vs land outside (1st photo left vs right).

There's still quite a few things in flower in the Estonian grasslands we visited on day one of our #SERE2024 preconference field trip, such as marsh pea (Lathyrus palustris) which is very rare back in the UK, and the beautiful wood cow wheat (Melampyrum nemorosum) which does not occur in the UK.

Another highlight on the first day of the #SERE2024 preconference field trip was a visit to Laelatu Wooded Meadow, one of the most species rich ecosystems in the world at small scales of up to 1m2 (up to 76 species recorded, and that's just vascular plants).

Some impressions from the preconference tour for the #SERE2024 conference in Tartu. Our trip leaders Aveliina and Elisabeth put together a great programme. Matsalu National Park and associated wooded meadows etc. and the board walk through Oldrema-Tuhu mire were just two of the highlights of day 1.

We’ll be participating in #SERE2024 next week, talking about MERLIN and landscape-scale restoration. Looking forward to the discussions!
