Sadly, MAGi/SynthaVision (yes, I keep writing it different ways... so did they) didn't really go on to do much after Tron. A short film for SIGGRAPH. A test with John Lasseter at Disney. They tried established a VFX office in Hollywood, but it didn't pan out.
Hmm...in the before-Disney-times, the Lucas companies used to publish lots of Siggraph papers. I think ACM as the rightsholder is supposed to let you cite figures from those, although they may be too scared to say yes in this case. Worth checking in with CARFAC imo
I read a recent paper in acm siggraph about wildfire modeling so I get it
Yeah, on SGI Onyx workstations, so tangental links between it and GSCube, but its only involvement with Spirits Within was that SIGGRAPH demonstration.
Digging into some old Sony CDs for research and came across some info about a fascinating little tech avenue that never really took off as intended: Sony's vision of broadband e-cinema, the fusion of movies and games, and the GSCube; the guts of 16 PS2s glued together for *real-time* CGI rendering.
Watching SIGGRAPH whitepaper intros and absent-mindedly thinking through an algorithm for 3D mesh generation. Y'know, as one does.
amazing thread, but it raises even more questions. why not write a siggraph paper and really explain this stuff? (just kidding i know why)
