You can swing a solid HF transceiver for under $500 (say, the Xiegu G90) and scratchbuilding a functional antenna can be pretty cheap, too

Scratchbuilding a NYC&HR 4 window caboose from a Westwood kit. Cupola castings are from Bitter Creek and a Gloorcraft kit. Id like to make accurate trucks but dont want to break out the solidworks.
It's fun! Designed to be played online but a lot of people are scratchbuilding and kitbashing to make it physical. I'm amassing stuff for that but in the meantime I made it all out of card.
