i like the theory that the one piece will turn out to be some sort of superweapon that will destroy the geographic barriers that the world government (coded somewhere between the british empire and the tokugawa shogunate) has used to divide the four seas and their countries

MEIJI RESTAURATION

One has to take into account the political and historical context that shapes people's way of thinking. We are in mid-19th century Japan. Until then, Japan had been a country isolated from the rest of the world as an island, but technology allowed Europeans and Americans to sail. From a political point of view, we see this separation between the Japanese who want to welcome foreigners with their technology and knowledge, and on the other hand, there are people who are afraid of having their land stolen, like China during the Opium Wars.

In the end the Tokugawa shogunate was overthrown, Emperor Meiji was placed on the throne and Japan opened its borders to communicate with the rest of the world.

The result is an explosion of shared knowledge

KITAZAWA the grandfather of manga

During this tumultuous period, the indigenous knowledge and the techniques brought over by the British and Americans gave rise to several magazines publishing political and social cartoons intended to amuse adults. It was with Box of Curios that Yasuji Kitazawa, known by his artistic pseudonym Rakuten Kitazawa, began his career in 1899. Three years later, Kitazawa began working with the magazine Jiji Shimpo, a daily newspaper that had a gazette of illustrations on Sundays.

The first modern manga dates back to 1902, and Rakuten Kitazawa was the first mangaka in history.

I have, yes, though that was some time ago. (It was excellent, of course.) And I'll be honest: I haven't given any thought to the Tokugawa shogunate since. 😜
