I had a wonderful sociolinguistics professor who said hatred of the cliche is unwarranted. Cliches aid communication. I think, oftentimes, professed avoidance is actually about snobbery rather than precision of communication.
(I especially enjoy the thing where they initiated contact with a grammatical prescription, and when I gave them a detailed description including the sociolinguistics of it, they said I was trying to be prescriptivist. I was just thinking yesterday how rare obnoxious kids like that are on Bsky.)
