Just wasted hours trying to come up with as many options as I can to get a customer to stop insisting that they need to load a SQL database across the Internet unencrypted. #Sysadminnery

How can it be that despite using RT for *23 years* I still trip over the same little UI bug every time it matters? (“Enter” key refreshes the “People” view of a ticket without saving the changes made on it, unlike all the other pages) #Sysadminnery#RequestTracker

One of the things doing #Sysadminnery#InfoSec issues has done to me is to convince me that the overwhelming majority of humans are NOT ready for the Internet.

Someday a customer will come to us knowing that to set up SSH access, we only need their PUBLIC key after we have told them "send us just the .pub file." That day is not today. #Sysadminnery#InfoSec

AWS Bahrain has something strange going on this week. Multiple unrelated sites (except for the fact that I’ve got eyes on them) seeing SYN flood claiming to be from 15.184/16. #InfoSec#Sysadminnery#ThreatIntel

And remember folks: no amount of patching and password security will save you from doing stupid shit that everyone with any clues has told you is risky and/or wrong. Any system can be made to load malicious code if you work hard enough at it, and too many users do just that. #Sysadminnery […]

They did it again. Reopened the ticket. I had to reply with the following (incriminating details replaced with unspecified parameters ) #Sysadminnery

Screengrab with text:

For clarity: This is being done by the §CUSTROLE user, logging in from $IP(1), an IP in $CUSTPLACE. That account regularly logs in from that address and from $IP(2), which is the $CUSTOMER web app server. Whatever process or person is using that account has explicitly and directly locked the folder twice. If you do not know how that is being done, we should probably assume the $CUSTROLE account is compromised.
