Venerable folklore scholar Jan Harold Brunvand has written repeatedly about urban legends featuring claims of refugees eating pets. Here he analyzes and debunks a specific previous incident reported in Springfield… Virginia… in 1982:

JHB's 1983 book THE CHOKING DOBERMAN, excerpt 1 of 4: 《The predominant motifs were the same ones found wherever similar groups of refugees had settled: evidence for the pet-eating was supposedly found in the Asians' garbage, Americans were alleged to have been approached by Vietnamese people wanting to buy their pets for food, cat tails were said to have been seen hanging over the side of a cooking pot, the police were covering up the cases, & so forth.

The sources for these stories were the familiar friends-of-friends & allegations that "It's all true. It was in the paper."

What had been in the paper repeatedly, Baer found, were official denials of the stories, statements from officials & from garbage-collection companies that no such thing had been documented, & reports of efforts to educate the refugees in American language & customs. But, since these news stories often repeated the oral-traditional stories in considerable detail, they also seem to have circulated the legend…》

The local president of a humanitarian organization has accused Oriental residents in Springfield of catching —and eating— neighborhood pets.

Though he acknowledges his “information” is "second and third hand," Jerry Southern, President of the Metropolitan Washington Branch of United Humanitarians Inc., has made his accusations public in a letter to Fairfax County Supervisor Marie B. Travesky and a press release to local media....

Southern said he first heard the rumor from his wife, who in turn had heard it from a friend. His wife's friend "either lives in the area or has a friend who lives in the area", he said.

The Journal was aware of Southern's charges at the time but could find no support for them from police, trash companies, or other animal protection officials, all of whom denied any knowledge of the alleged incident.》

3/4 《His press release claimed that United Humanitarians Inc. conducted "an exhaustive investigation" that revealed that Fairfax police and the health department were "called into the matter by employees of a trash collection service that found animal pelts in a trash container."

A spokesman for the Fairfax County Police Department denied such an incident ever oc- curred; he called Southern's account "a far-out story that someone has concocted and foisted on the world."

Police Public Relations Officer Warren Carmichael said: "None of our people has ever heard of anything remotely related to it, and we have had no increase in reports of missing animals...."

"Something that big," he said, "I'm sure would have been heard by at least a few people. And no one in any of our stations had heard about it. In fact, they asked me what I'd been smoking."

Carmichael said the police had not searched a house for pet meat and that there was no "cover up."》

4/4《Bettijane Mackall, president of the Animal Protective Association of America, said there was "no doubt" in her mind that incidences of pet eating were happening in Northern Virginia "because there is a big Oriental population in this area now."

She received a telephone call last fall from a woman in Great Falls who had placed an ad to give away her collie, she said. The ad was answered by a Korean family who seemed to like the dog and wanted to take it away, according to Mackall. The woman was agreeable and said the dog would make a good pet. The family then told her the dog was not going to be a pet, but a meal, said Mackall.

However, My Hien Hoang, a Vietnamese refugee who came to this country seven years ago, says it's unusual for Orientals to eat dogs and cats, and she doubts Southern's allegations.

Asian peoples, like Americans, keep dogs and cats as pets, and, like the Americans, become attached to the animals…》

Ah, what with the weather in the city of Bradbury's longtime residence currently having us underwater, would be an excellent day to view with my kid that classic as well as the much shorter one below.
