You know, when I was drafting my post I originally typed "Am I safe from Tarzan?" but ran out of characters, so had to delete the "from Tarzan" bit! II wasn't safe! But then, did I really want to be safe? (That's in reference to the OTHER convo!!) 😂

Master of Kung Fu #25 features a letter (which is apparently edited) that rings true today: it’s taking Gerry Conway and Doug Moench to task for deviating from how Sax Rohmer portrayed Fu Manchu and the Si-Fan while demanding that more characters from the books appear. The response is great:

An image from Master of Kung Fu #25’s letters pages that features an editorial response to a letter complaining about the comic not portraying Sax Rohmer’s characters accurately. The response:

“Definitely not, Gene. While we’re sorry we don’t have room to print several paragraphs of your comparison of the Si-Fan in the books to that in the comics, we think the gist of your complaint is is evident from the remaining portion of your letter above. And we’d like to take the opportunity to present *our* side of it, since your missive is representative of a (surprisingly small) number of comments.
It so happens that, whenever the literary creations of a popular author are being used after his death, arguments will arise as to whether or not he would have written them that way, had he lived. The answer, of course, is *no*-since no two authors ever do anything exactly alike. That does not, however, negate the validity of such subsequently-written stories, which must strive to maintain the quality of the original, while still allowing for character development, since it is erroneous to assume that characters would cease evolving with the last story to be written by their creator.
Kingsley Amis faced this problem when writing the fourteenth James Bond novel, COLONEL SUN, as did Fritz Leiber with TARZAN AND THE VALLEY OF GOLD, and-indeed-as did Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp in completing the text Conan saga. How well any of them succeeded is a matter of individual judgment, and all of this still may not serve to change your opinion.
However, we feel obligated to point out that no matter what Doug did-so long as he was employing Sax Rohmer’s characters-he would never win the approval of all the Rohmerites who read this magazine. Therefore, he can only do what *he* feels is right, and hope that it’s what also feels right to most of the rest of you.
That’s our side of it.
Nuff said.”
