I read an article about Threads earlier, which clarified something real that’s puzzled me: why were all nuclear bunkers/command centres abandoned? A: Nuclear war would render them all useless/pointless very quickly. Somehow that brought the horror home to adult me like WTWB blows did to child me.

A melting snowman that took a chunk of my four-year-old innocence with it. 😿 Obviously WTWB is by far the darker and weightier of the two. But likewise, I don't think of The Snowman as a particularly light-hearted piece. The film as a whole has this super haunting and melancholic atmosphere.

Have you read the ALT texts to my 2 images? Briggs did write more children's books after WTWB, but his next one was about Thatcher, the Argentinian dictator, & the Falklands War. It's a shame he didn't write a sequel to Fungus The Bogeyman, my very favourite of his books (& one of my top picture 👇

WTWB (in book form) is the only one I felt able to deal with. I've not seen Threads (I was around when first shown) and my GF built up a collection of any related DVDs, like War Game or Day After or that one with the boat.

Preferable to ending up like Jim and Hilda Bloggs. (WTWB terrified me back in the early 80s.)

I love WTWB but I would never describe it as "disturbing". I think that term is overused in pseudo media analysis. "Heartbreaking" is the proper term.

Went to an exhibition of Raymond’s work this year. All amazing original art work from loads of his works including WTWB. It was incredible everything from outline sketches to full colour illustrations for print runs. Several hours I’ll never forget. Got home to hear he had died the same day.

WtWB is on my list of "Great Films I Will Never Watch Again". In a way it parallels another animated movie on that list, Grave of the Fireflies: children instead of old people, starvation instead of radiation, WW2 instead of WW3, but otherwise almost the same movie plotwise and thematically.
