If it IS about a certain set of genitals (which is also fine in isolation, maybe you just dig vulvas that much) AFAB and AMAB wouldn't still account for people who had genital surgeries so in that regard so in that way it also doesn't work.

Sadly this is a binary and cis-centric misunderstanding of what non-binary is. AFAB and AMAB refer to assignments at birth. They say nothing about what genitals a person has now, how their gender is presented, or how they would interact with you.

i feel like people are getting really confused over what 'identity' means like when people are saying "i don't identify as afab/amab; i *am* afab/amab" it's clear 'identifies as' is being contrasted with 'is,' with 'identifies as x' being seen as necessarily implying that someone is not in fact x

And when I think of non-binary people (I hope this isn’t a case of non-binary-phobia, if so please call me out on that!) I can think of having a relationship with an AFAB person but not an AMAB person.
