It's hard to see the dorsal side and think "snail" because the only coils are in fact on the inside, a 'body whorl' that encloses the organism's soft organs. Note the respiratory pores on this green abalone (Haliotis fulgens). The second picture is the foot-side up in a Sydney seafood market.
