Because the battlelines are always shifting, you're going to want to take in information too. But you don't have time to do that in the sort of detail you'd need to make sure you're quoting things in context, let alone slow down enough to read an actual book. But it isn't gonna matter cos, again...
I think it was Paul Tillich who said one of the most remarkable things about early Christian history is how quickly the familiar battlelines arose, how the fights of the 20th century weren't that far off the 4th century, etc. This is delightful expansion on the matter, lmao
