A color portrait of Bill Weld, who served as the Republican governor of Massachussetts from 1991-1997 and who later ran against Donald Trump for president. But before all that, Weld was a federally appointed attorney who focused on white collar crime. Friends and even enemies credited Weld with a bloodhound-like pursuit of corruption. His success ratio was astounding, yet one case slipped through his fingers, to Weld’s everlasting regret. It involved the blackmarket teeth trade and possible criminal connections to the mob. Weld was zeroing in on a principle suspect when one day while he was at lunch, a tall, thin man with flecks of moss in his hair visited the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Boston. No one in the office recalled what the man said or did, but the assistant attorneys and special agents on the case all agreed that the tooth trade investigation was nothing but a dead end. They refused to work on the case, forcing Weld to drop it.
