I live 5 minutes from the german border. Wilders wants to close it. Im still laughing. 80 bordercrossing points in my province alone that is w/o counting smuggler routes; plus; unlike the uk, we are part of schengen; close the border pay a price;you can't have it both ways & eh;there is no border:)I live 5 minutes from the german border. Hundreds of asylum seekers have gathered to Kostomuksha, Russia, located 35 km east from Vartius, the southernmost FI bordercrossing, which is still not closed. They are expected to approach Vartius the following days. Source: Iltalehti, who has published photos of the asylum seeker groups in Russia

DANTE'S BUREAU 4/4 Deanna Fong, the fabulous guest ed. of TCR 3.50, suggested that images accompany the text of "Infernal Customs"— so I unearthed some bordercrossing photos, such as this one, literally between Europe & Asia.

Photo by Carlos A. Pittella (Istanbul 2014), taken from a ferry between Europe & Asia, with a seagull on the foreground, more gulls in the background, as well as water, buildings, and a Turkish flag.

DANTE'S BUREAU 3/4 I wanted a hybrid text to convey bordercrossing tension—between boxed prose & free verse. Here's a page from "Infernal Customs," in TCR 3.50.

The distinction between “person” and “individual” explains the tension between two systems that are superimposed and frequently at odds in bureaucracy (...). The conflict between law and exception illuminates the bordercrossings of Dante and Vergil. The personal relationships bend the individualistic system, but only as a favour for the happy few. These happy few are “the important people, who transcend the rules that constrain and govern the ordi- nary person.”

Gathering fines for every election I missed,
my electoral title was canceled.
Hence the need for a certificate
of electoral release.
I still must xfer my title to the Exterior Zone,
but since this year is an election year,
I must reach out to my original Electoral Zone
which is extinct.
I must find out my new Electoral Zone
in order to request
a special circumstantiated
Certificate of Electoral Release
which still does not un-cancel my old title
but explains (as a footnote to a footnote)
nothing.

Thrilled to have a bordercrossing piece in The Capilano Review 3.50. Here's its Dantesque opening (of 9 pp.). Gratitude to ed. Deanna Fong for this gorgeous "In(ter)ventions in the Archive" special issue! ps.: & honored to open for Liz Howard, whose piece follows mine 💜

Opening of "from DANTE'S BUREAU, Infernal Customs," by Carlos A. Pittella:

As Dante and Vergil approach the city of Dis in the lower rings of hell, they encounter resistance. The gatekeepers say only Vergil may proceed, and Dante is terrified he will be left alone. Vergil tries to parlay with the demons, but they slam the gates in his face. Vergil sighs, confessing he is vexed, then tells Dante not to be daunted, because they shall win this contest against whoever tries to block their way. Reminding Dante that the gatekeepers’ insolence is nothing new, Vergil announces their course of action: to wait! All they have to do is wait.

Brazilian modernist
Carlos Drummond de Andrade
repeated this line in permutations
throwing them as a mock sonnet,
squashing as a tombstone
all poetic mandates.
Do you think Carlos stopped
to think?
In the middle of the way there is always some form
hurtful & heavy
