I regret to inform you that the new Stonewall Visitor's Center is terrible. This is the sum total of what it has to say about the riots.

"It was a rebellion, it was an uprising, it was a civil rights disobedience-it wasn't no damn riot."

STORMÉ DELARVERIE, Woman Known as the Butchlesbian Who Scuffled with Police Outside

THE UPRISING

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a routine police raid of the Stonewall Inn sparked what became the turning point of the LGBTQ+ movement: the Stonewall Uprising. Over the next six days, members of the LGBTQ+ community and Village residents came together in active resistance. It wasn't the first time LGBTQ+ people mobilized against oppression, but this particular period of community organizing energized a new generation of activists.

"Before the riots, I wanted to go around and convince the straight world we were okay. And after Stonewall... we were going to do what we were going to do, and we weren't going to ask their permission."
