I don’t want to gatekeep gaslighting but the way it’s being used in popular discourse is unhelpful. It’s co-opting a very real form of abuse and using it to control (or end) a conversation that needs to happen. I don’t like this trend where forgiveness and grace are never an option. It kills hope.
I also do understand that words and meanings can evolve, but not in this short space of time. Gaslighting may be an oldish phrase but it's only been in common political use in recent years

They say something objectively horrible. When you call them on it, and they own their mistake, apologize sincerely, and explain their mental state at the time the thing was said, but express genuine remorse for having said it, that….is NOT gaslighting! It’s growth.
They say something objectively horrible. When you call them on it, and they say “yeah I said that shit, come at me bro”, that is also not gaslighting. Maybe it’s being a jerk depending on the thing, but it’s not gaslighting.
I’ll give some examples: Person A says something objectively horrible. When you call them on it, and they say “I didn’t say that” or “you misheard me” or “I wouldn’t have said that if YOU hadn’t XYZ”…that is gaslighting.
The definition of gaslighting is “using psychological manipulation to intentionally attempt to cause a victim to question their sanity.” It is not “said something I don’t like or disagree with, or caused me to rethink a stance I previously held.” Just…throwing that out there.
