Western boundary currents (WBCs) The three major subtropical WBCs of the SH are the Agulhas Current (AC) in the Indian Ocean, the East Australian Current (EAC) in the Pacific Ocean and the Brazil Current (BC) in the Atlantic Ocean, which are connected by the SH super gyre. Shows the warming in the western boundary current extension regions which transport more heat to the polar regions - here the Southern Hemisphere Oceans.
Pictures showing a positive Southern Annular mode - closer to Antarctica and a negative SAM which is further away from Antarctica l- larger circle - if the SAM is positive the circumpolar winds are closer to Antarctica, thereby pulling the southward part of the western boundary currents with them which leads to more warm water being transported poleward - short version!

Current situation of marine heatwaves - they cover large parts of the global ocean. As all feedbacks in the Earth system also the feedback of marine heatwave expansion and intensification is been able to show non-linear behavior. This happened in the second half of 2023 when MHWs made another jump. Won't be the last. Wonder how much longer I have to wait till climate science takes this feedback seriously starting with the admission that they are a feedback of global warming the upper oceans too fast...
