Trains were the primary means of mass transit in the USA, so they inevitably were featured in films but filmmakers were too imaginative to use the same trope repeatedly And other technology was popular. e.g. The Grand Guignol-inspired "telephone for help, there's a killer in the house!" plot device
I liked ROMULUS better than you did, but I also left the theatre feeling like, "Maybe there's not actually that much that can be mined from this concept in film format." I've read Dark Horse ALIENS comics that were more imaginative and creative with the themes than any of the films since the 1980s.
