One of my pet peeves in modern horror films is when the central premise works only as metaphor, not as actual text.
the author attempts to lampshade one of the character's acceptance of a series of absurd assertions, but provides no reason for the reader to accept them; and fails to explain how - or if - any of the other characters also accept these absurdities or if they are just not made privy at all
A defense mechanism used by people who are avoiding an uncomfortable truth is to lampshade the fact of avoidance but then speak a different accepted truth adjacent to the unspoken one EVERYONE is denouncing Trump because it's safer than denouncing the entire GOP as a hostile state-within-a-state.
