This is just down the road (next village) from where I lived as a tween-teenager. North Canterbury mostly got off pretty lightly at that point. The church in Lyttelton where my father was vicar well before I was born did not fare so well (I think it was wooden).

New Metro Diamond Harbour ferry

[there's a photo here of the new small ferry that seats around 20 people i think. it's silver with a light blue stripe down the side. at the front of the vessel in white all caps lettering it says 'Black Pearl. it has a small radar on the roof. it is moored at the jetty at the Diamond Bay end of the route. behind it is some various green foliage and trees. the water is a kind of teal colour.]

Have you spotted our new ferry on the waters of Lyttelton Harbour/ Whakaraupō or Diamond Harbour/Waipapa?

The new Metro ferry, Black Pearl, started operating this month and we are so excited!

Two events marked the addition of our new vessel, including one on Friday 13th September with officials.

One of these things is not like the other. The one on the left is wrong. It’s actually windy - which is correct but raining heavily. No sign of sun.

Screenshot of the weather app for Ōtautahi. It’s so incorrect it’s not funny. Pouring with rain & windy & there is snow falling in surrounding areas. Screenshot shows temperature at 3 degrees & windy. No sign of rain.

I’ll be 50 in a couple of years. I cherish the words of the late great Humphrey Lyttelton “As we journey through life, discarding baggage along the way, we should keep an iron grip, to the very end, on the capacity for silliness. It preserves the soul from desiccation.”
