(However, a conflict with VGA on post is odd. While MCGA appears to be a subset of VGA, it is *not*. Text mode while in 31.5KHz is doublescanned like VGA, is actually a true CGA mode. It ONLY brings Model 13h with 64K VRAM, that's it. MCGA even supports true 15KHz modes per their heritage.)
I wish I knew how MCGA failed.I was in the middle of reverse engineering the controller when it finally died, as it was dying when I started and wanted to document a lot of it.I mostly finished, but I'm fairly certain it's the memory gate array ASIC that failed, as it causes I/O conflicts with VGA.
I still have my PS/2's VGA monitor out in the garage. Mine is the 8512 model. I still have the PS/2 as well, the 8086 model with MCGA, however the MCGA controller has sadly died, and in an unfortunate way that prevents a VGA card from working. Some day I'll remove the MCGA chipset to use VGA.
