Norman money was where it's at. But were Normans "English"? Was the first colonisation of Ireland an extension of Viking colonialism? (Not the first time the Vikings had eyes on Ireland.)

I know all about that. But the word "derailleur" wasn't imposed on us by the Normans.

2. ceathru, or quarters; duiche - territorial lands; triocha cead, an area of recruitment of soldiers and baile blataigh, sufficient land to feed a militia. All of this is a bit 'ish' as the nuances of meaning are lost to time. As the Normans nd other invaders came, new land divisions were intro'd

@goingmedieval.bsky.social listening to the episode on castles and one thing that forcefully occurred to me was that the way the Normans were building castles is exactly how we describe Roman legions - large scale building by soldier-engineers; we don’t hold the former in the same esteem though

Code for Islamophobia. Of course we had druidism and paganism here before all the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Normans came here with their fake religion, rope and boring first names. Let's go back to that and burning our enemies in wicker men.
