Three weeks after I visited this spot in December 2016 the lava delta collapsed into the sea emphasising that despite appearing āsolidā the cooled lava is actually just brittle glass. It can have intricate structures in outcrop, but itās inherently unstable. 2/5 www.thrillist.com/travel/natio...
Todayās #EarthScienceWeek#outcrop is being made in real time at the far end of the timescale from Acasta. On the Big Island of Hawaiāi, the PuāuāOāo vent on Kilauea produces a lava flow that reaches the southern coast in a spectacular fashion that only 900ĀŗC lava meeting sea water can. 1/5
According to one story, a wealthy collector of rare rocks in Japan sent a team to the island outcrop with explosives to obtain some fresh boulders for their collection. No idea if that is true, but the fresh rocks were there, and I have a couple of bookends from the Hadean thanks to itā¦ 6/6
The irony of geology in the tundra is the rocks have been conveniently exposed by a continental-scale glaciation, but close up they are covered in lichen. So a pressure washer was brought in to clean up one outcrop to get a better look at the gneiss (remember this is a *long* way to the store). 5/6
Geologists get excited by old rocks because the Earth is ~4.5 billion years old, but early rocks have been destroyed by bombardment or the tectonic rock cycle. Old rocks (>3.5 billion years) in outcrop are very rare and exciting to find - they tell us about how the early Earth worked. 4/6
Nothing says āEarth Scienceā like a good outcrop, so to mark #EarthScienceWeek āļøš§Ŗ (13-19 Oct) letās explore āEarth Science Everywhereā with daily outcrops. Weāll visit famous outcrops, some personal favourites and learn of outcrops in big stories about the environment and how the Earth works. 1/6
Yeah, if the flannel and somewhat niche outcrop werenāt enough, the Heady Tooper should get it done.
