Three weeks after I visited this spot in December 2016 the lava delta collapsed into the sea emphasising that despite appearing ā€˜solidā€™ the cooled lava is actually just brittle glass. It can have intricate structures in outcrop, but itā€™s inherently unstable. 2/5 www.thrillist.com/travel/natio...

Todayā€™s #EarthScienceWeek#outcrop is being made in real time at the far end of the timescale from Acasta. On the Big Island of Hawaiā€™i, the Puā€™uā€˜Oā€™o vent on Kilauea produces a lava flow that reaches the southern coast in a spectacular fashion that only 900ĀŗC lava meeting sea water can. 1/5

According to one story, a wealthy collector of rare rocks in Japan sent a team to the island outcrop with explosives to obtain some fresh boulders for their collection. No idea if that is true, but the fresh rocks were there, and I have a couple of bookends from the Hadean thanks to itā€¦ 6/6

A cliff outcrop of light and dark rocks with water on the left (the stern of a small red boat can just been seen). Cliff is around 10 metres In height with a jumble of large lichen covered rounded boulders on the left and a patch of small angular clean looking rocks on the right. This is the location of the reputed explosion to collect rocks.

The irony of geology in the tundra is the rocks have been conveniently exposed by a continental-scale glaciation, but close up they are covered in lichen. So a pressure washer was brought in to clean up one outcrop to get a better look at the gneiss (remember this is a *long* way to the store). 5/6

An undulating outcrop of rock showing several alternating and merging layers and veins of light and dark rock stretching away from the viewer. A sledgehammer around 70 cm long sits in the middle of the view to provide scale. There are some sparse trees in the distance.

Geologists get excited by old rocks because the Earth is ~4.5 billion years old, but early rocks have been destroyed by bombardment or the tectonic rock cycle. Old rocks (>3.5 billion years) in outcrop are very rare and exciting to find - they tell us about how the early Earth worked. 4/6

An artistā€™s impression of the Late Heavy Bombardment of Earth. Meteors are streaking across a dark sky dominated by a very large and glowing Moon. A meteor has just crashed into a large lava lake in the middle distance. Other lave eruptions can be seen nearby and a column of smoke rising from a volcano can be seen in the distance.

Nothing says ā€˜Earth Scienceā€™ like a good outcrop, so to mark #EarthScienceWeek āš’ļøšŸ§Ŗ (13-19 Oct) letā€™s explore ā€˜Earth Science Everywhereā€™ with daily outcrops. Weā€™ll visit famous outcrops, some personal favourites and learn of outcrops in big stories about the environment and how the Earth works. 1/6

Yeah, if the flannel and somewhat niche outcrop werenā€™t enough, the Heady Tooper should get it done.
