#igoatocs

I got invited to speak at a UC Irvine free speech conference once in 2021 and thankfully Matt Taibbi has now reported on it. He found out via FOIA. This is an extremely newsworthy thing, please make sure all your friends know.

Hi.
I hope this finds you well.
It's been a while since we have connected.
As you saw from the email from Brenda, we are moving forward with payment - $20/hour for up to $3000, to start.
I shared your draft of the "N-word" backgrounder with Carlos Cortes - the author of the article you site and one of the Center's inaugural fellows. His thoughts are below. See what you think. I also asked him to draft a list of questions for this backgrounder - see attached. Again, interested in your thoughts.
"As an early droft, I think the n-word piece is much further along than the first droft of the BRT piece. It is coherent, well organized and provocative. Of course, any article that quotes me con't be all bad, con it?
Seriously, though, thanks for the nod.
There is one area that you do not address explicitly, although it is implicit in some of the exomples -- the difference between the use of the word in writing versus voicing it in class. For example, using Huckleberry Finn with its references to Jim in the text as contrasted with saying his name aloud in class. That seems to be a demarcation line that is developing. There seems to be support for reading the original Huck Finn, but also for avoiding voicing Jim's name in closs. In fact, I think that kind of distinction exists in Geoff Stone's decision. My sense is that your piece needs to address this issue early on and explicitly in order to provide context for exomining the specific cases."
James chronicles most of the more head-
scratching moments in the documents, including the fact that the Speech Center invited people like Renée DiResta and former Twitter heavy Vijaya
Gadde to share their wisdom and one professor opining that Internet companies should "de-platform and police lies." You'll sense a broader theme in these exchanges. The academics seem perpetually on alert and afraid of seeming unresponsive to "harm" and "safety" considerations.
On February 21, Deutchman invited Renée DiResta of the Stanford Internet Observatory to speak at that same conference.

Subject: invitation to speak at upcoming UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement conference
Dear Ms. DiResta,
I hope this finds you well. I am the executive director of the IC National Center for Erce Speech and Civic Engagement, and I am writing to invite you to speak at our third annual #Speech Matters conference (virtual, of course). | This event will take place virtually on April 20th and 21" from 10-12.30 PST. This year's conference will focus on
"looking ahead" at the future of speech and civic engagement on campus.
An integral clement of this conference will be discussion of the role of dis and misinformation as well as digital literacy, especially in higher education settings. Your expertise and insights on these issues would be a wonderful way to anchor
the pancl.
If you want to get a sense of the Center's programs and initiatives, please take a look at 2020 annual report. We have hosted programming on related topics such as how the Biden administration should protect free speech and democracy in a digital world. On Tuesday, our Speech Spotlight Live focuses on, "Is De-platforming the Answer? How to Fight Attacks on Democracy in the Digital Ags. At last year's conference we had over 200 in-person participants and over 400 live stream participants. Audience members consisted of students, staff, administration and faculty from universities around the country as well as representatives of higher education associations and Washington think tanks.
I appreciate your consideration, and look forward to hearing from you.
It would be a privilege to have you participate.
Best regards,
Michelle
