Today’s reading: already looks excellent. Surveillance law, data retention and human rights: a risk to democracy. I was lucky enough to be the examiner for Matthew White’s PhD - this book started with that research.

A related explainer on the toering of comp packages. The 4-year vesting schedule at top-tier (what I call Tier 3) companies have a bunch of interesting consequences on stock price vs retention. When stock falls, it’s the opposite as now! newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/trimodal-n...

Trimodal Nature of Tech Compensation Revisited
Trimodal Nature of Tech Compensation Revisited

Why does a similar position have 2-4x compensation differences, in the same market? A closer look at the trimodal model I published in 2021. More data, and new observations.

🇩🇪⚖️That's how apex courts should communicate - the German Federal Constitutional Court provides almost instantly a full English translation of a crucial judgment on surveillance data retention by the German Police - not just the summary of key findings, but the whole opinion of the Court. 1/

And definitely not an MLM. They want you to "turn your viewers into investors" to increase retention and engagement. 😬 Don't know how the platform finds out your income or secures those transactions? No worries, it's all on the blockchain, baby!

"Build for the next web
No need to wait until it adds up or until the end of the month. Your transactions are blockchain based and therefore safer than they have ever been: Decentralized and tamper-proof."

Replying so that you know that I'm NOT replying in the affirmative. In both cases, I wanted to stay at home longer with my newborn sons, especially since I was breastfeeding, but finances & employment retention laws do NOT allow me more than 8 weeks. (Unpaid!) Even though I nearly died both times.

I can bet that there's some statistic somewhere that shows it ups viewer retention, or something like that

Morbidly fascinating: I looked up the phrase "trial by ordeal" and the way Cerbera manghas fruit (below) was used in Madagascar to determine a person's guilt or innocence. Here are a few paragraphs from Wikipedia. I love poisonous plants. ☠️ 🌱

"In the early 19th century, tangena constituted one of the chief measures by which Queen Ranavalona maintained order within her realm. A poison was extracted from the nut of the native tangena shrub and ingested, with the outcome determining innocence or guilt. Although many versions of the ordeal were practiced, the basic procedure involved feeding the accused three pieces of chicken skin, followed by a mixture of the poison and leaves or juice from banana or the cardamom plant.[4]"
"If all three pieces of skin were vomited up then innocence was declared, but death or a failure to regurgitate all three pieces of skin indicated guilt.[5] If nobles (andriana) or freemen (hova) were compelled to undergo the ordeal, the poison was typically administered to the accused only after dog and rooster stand-ins had already died from the poison's effects, while among members of the slave class (andevo), the ordeal required them to immediately ingest the poison themselves.[6] According to custom, the If all three pieces of skin were vomited up then innocence was declared, but death or a failure to regurgitate all three pieces of skin indicated guilt.[5] If nobles (andriana) or freemen (hova) were compelled to undergo the ordeal, the poison was typically administered to the accused only after dog and rooster stand-ins had already died from the poison's effects, while among members of the slave class (andevo), the ordeal required them to immediately ingest the poison themselves.
"It has been reported that the chicken skin was a symbolic representation of human flesh, which was believed to be consumed by those controlled by evil spirits, thus the retention of chicken skin would indicate that one must consume human flesh.[4] According to 19th-century Malagasy historian Raombana, in the eyes of the greater populace, the tangena ordeal was believed to represent a sort of celestial justice in which the public placed their unquestioning faith, even to the point of accepting a verdict of guilt in a case of innocence as a just but unknowable divine mystery.[6] The nut of the tangena plant was reportedly believed to contain a spirit known as Manamango that could contribute to determine the guilt or innocence of a person.[8]"

No. My concern is practical. A ChristoFascist / Christian Nationalist government means the demise of our democracy. Where there is no democracy, there is no structure for institutional reform or the accrual power through the election of majorities & the retention of power.
