I don't have quite enough understanding of the Beatles to put a finger on it, but to me it's almost like Kurt Cobain was obsessed with one Beatles' songwriting while Elliott Smith was into a different one's. I should put a day into it sometime and do some deep listening
Kurt really took the heart of what made the Beatles great* and rephrased it in punk form- his pop songwriting was /impeccable/
