In the book, the "monsters" only come out at night and the protagonist stakes them through the heart which sounds definitely vampire. I can't recall if he does any staking in the film but the monsters only come at night...
True, but in this case the word was "Staking": his best friend besides Willow is Vampirized, and Xander stakes him at least partly by accident. It's the kind of thing where the fallout would either get a several episode arc, or inform his personality, in later Buffy, never mind in other shows.
