Well I've stopped getting giant sugary coffee beverages from Wawa/Starbucks altogether, don't drink any soft drinks, so a couple teaspoons in my morning cup might not be all that bad really

Strongly recommend this chutney recipe from Amanda Hesser’s “the cook and the gardener” - which was a wedding present & contains many slightly odd recipes plus a number of ones I love!

6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
3 pounds green tomatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
2 cups raisins
2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground allspice
2 tablespoons sea salt
1 teaspoon black peppercorns, crushed
1 teaspoon white peppercorns, crushed
1 large knuckle ginger (size of a golf ball), peeled, sliced, and minced
2 onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic
3 cups sugar
2 cups red wine vinegar (1 500ml bottle works)

Add all ingredients to pan, simmer until thick. Sterilise jars,

Nice with some chilli added too. Good to eat right away but better if you can bear to leave it mature for a few months.

Also works well with pears instead of green tomatoes

You show me a sincere looking politician - and I will count the teaspoons after he she or they leaves

No spoons are clean so we’re eating porridge with teaspoons which feels like I’m part of some sort of regency era drama…

do you say scahns or scowns?

eight golden brown scones cooling
on a rack

CLASSIC SCONES
8 to 12 scones
Increase the sugar up to 1/4 cup for a sweeter scone.
Preheat the oven to 450°F.
Sift together into a large bowl:
1¾ cups all-purpose flour
2¼ teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
½ teaspoon salt
Cut in, using a pastry blender or 2 knives, until the size of small peas:
¼ cup (½ stick) cold butter
Beat in a small bowl:
2 large eggs
Reserve 2 tablespoons of the beaten eggs. Beat in to the reminder:
⅓ cup heavy cream
Make a well in the dry ingredients. Pour in the liquid and combine with a few swift strokes. Handle the dough as little as possible. Turn it out onto a lightly floured board. Pat to ¾ inch thick. To make the classic wedge shape, pat into an 8-inch round and then cut into 8 to 12 wedges or cut into diamond shapes or as for Biscuit Sticks, above. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Brush with the reserved egg and sprinkle with:
Salt or sugar
* Bake until golden, about 15 minutes.

After seeing this, I went to the internet archive and searched for her book. I found volume two, and I love the way the recipes are written. Direct and to the point, no long-winded narrative, or showing you pictures and needing to scroll 15 pages before you get to ingredients.

My cat is normally a finicky eater. She'll eat maybe 1 1/2 teaspoons of food, and won't touch another bite, so when she literally begged me for more tonight, twice, I just gave up and put the can down for her 🤣 She's too skinny anyway (No worms, just very active and finicky)

OP said “it’s just spices” to me when I asked what the brown was. I think she messed up teaspoons with cups?

Tbf finding a nice second hand one again isn’t going to be a drag. See also ‘teaspoons’.
