BLUE

Hi, I do bioethics. Thx for sharing this! Lots going on here, but I am super-wary of the #technochauvinism here: "Algorithms... might actually paint a more authentic portrait of the way a person has lived, compared with a surrogate…" Humans aren't just "in the loop." We ARE the loop.

I would also rather gnaw my own arm off than have a Ring doorbell. Luckily I recently learned the word technochauvinism so now I can be smug about this.

Right. And people's twinned habits of "it's just math/code, so it can't be biased"/"it's math/code so it HAS to be true!" reactions to technology (what Broussard has called "technochauvinism") means that the bullshit (technical term) presented by "AI" will be uncritically accepted by a Lot of people

I was reading Meredith Broussard’s Automated Inequality the other day. Her chapter on technochauvinism as the solution to every social problem really nails this.

Feeding these things through code and math gives them a veneer of "objectivity." It gives people a way to wash their hands and elide responsibility, a process the repeated habit of and inclination toward Meredith Broussard terms "technochauvinism." We REALLY WANT the shiny, mathy, "objective" answer

Technochauvinism is very bad and I will never endorse that kind of bullshit. Some good uses doesn’t mean that shit will save the world. I agree on that.

Whoof, someone’s feeling tender about how hollow his technochauvinism is

I’m a critic of technochauvinism and technoableism (shoutout @ashleyshoo.bsky.social). I do think these tools can be bad or dangerous. And definitely don’t think they will solve all problems. I think acting like they can’t provide some help or access isn’t very helpful.
