The only stuff that you explicitly *HAVE* to spend money on is TennoGen cosmetics. Anything that's plat you can earn. (There is also no shame in purchasing plat, supporting DE if you like the game is good, but I'd recommend holding for a Daily Tribute discount on plat purchases)

Two of my favorite fashion frames I've done are based on the Protos from Starcraft II. Ivara Prime's look was inspired by a High Templar, and Rhino Prime's look was inspired by Artanis, especially once I got his Blade of the Lotus Skin and the Tennogen Syndana he's wearing.

i'm also a console player so tennogen costs plat for me so i've never really felt the need to purchase plat. i've gotten prime accessories (when that was still a thing lol), tennocon packs, and sometimes their smaller bundles before that've included it, but i've never flat out bought it
