I was “too thin” to him. I also met my mom’s parents. they both knew japanese from the occupation and could understand what I said, they’d translate to the rest of the family but also couldn’t/wouldn’t speak japanese anymore. my mom’s dad is actually her stepdad, not super common for that generation

This sort of art style is a little closer to what I'd want to use for my adventure game. Might thin down lines a bit, but I love the diffusion that comes with shadows and a limited color palette.
Well if it helps, I've never been bothered by it, and I'm grateful that you speak up about this stuff. I had to do a lot of work on myself to stop seeing thinness/thin people as the enemy, tbh. Knowing they're often victims of fatphobia in its own weird way helps.
But also like, this is why I struggle with this so much. A world where a thin person can't talk about being thin would be so weird! And like, it's NORMAL for people talk about losing weight, if that's what they're trying to do. I resist talking about this sometimes b/c it feels police-y of me.
