Given what day it is, I was about to start a mini-🧵 on this Nature study on the earliest documented treponema genomes (the organisms involved in syphilis & a couple of related diseases). But then I saw that the editors at Nature had posted a "notice of concern": www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🧪

It's a little more complicated than that. The oldest remains with definitive Treponema pallidum genomes present are from Brazil, 2000 years ago. There are also remains from the 12th century in Finland/Estonia with signs of a Treponema-like illness that may or may not have been syphilis.
