This is in a week, please consider coming out to support funding for affordable housing and for supportive services for the unhoused and cost burdened. Itā€™s gonna be a tough budget battle this year all around and we will need all the advocates we can get www.montgomerycountymd.gov/OPI/budget-f...

It's time to elect a council that listens to you, and community experts.

Portland Street Response is an effective program. When we make it 24/7, the program becomes eligible for Medicaid funding. This way PSR can do more, and cost the taxpayers less. Make it citywide.

We need an effective, transparent mechanism to deal efficiently with traffic safety issues. Stop signs that aren't visible or pedestrian lights that are not activated make streets less safe.

The unhoused are Portlanders, too. 40% of street homeless work, and 53% in shelters work. Portland businesses depend on unhoused workers, everyone who works should be able to afford housing.

The current government underspent funds for affordable housing by more than 40%. We need

Full disclosure, I was involved in the design of the predecessor co-responder model in Chicago that did involve police & fire. Not saying that 100% alternate models are bad, they can be a great choice, like Denver STAR, but the the prior model was very successful in terms of not leading to arrests.

Screenshot from Chicago Tribune article:

Since 2021, CARE teams have responded to more than 1,500 calls. The calls have resulted in zero arrests and use of force in less than
1% of incidents, according to the city news release.
"By directing 9-1-1 mental health calls to public health teams, we are ending the criminalization of these issues and helping to ensure people who are unhoused or experiencing a mental health challenge get the treatment and support they need," Mayor Brandon Johnson said in the news release.

And there will probably be a nice, unassuming lady who does pottery and collects socks for the unhoused who gets crushed by the floating port-o-let. The deal with the devil provides a lot of coverage until it doesnā€™t. The hurricane never smooshes the assholes.

I donā€™t know the exact percentages but the number of unhoused people over 70 in Madison is shocking

I wish I could find the study/article but in a recent study on the unhoused they found a surprisingly large percent were due to them having to quit their jobs or lost their jobs to care for family, especially elderly parents.
