Jake was in a mood™️ for his two year old futurity. Granted, it was nearly 100 degrees. He came in second (out of 2) but still managed to score a 70.5 #hanoverian#warmblood#equestrian#dressage

You cannot just show up all "yeah, I'm the richest asshole in this school and bought a million dollar warmblood who exceeds size limits and might injure someone. Now I'm the best."

Jake vs the motorbike. His snacks are offer delivered by said motorbike so he is *suspicious* but not afraid.

Well he sure doesn’t look like he tried to die and spent over a week in the ICU. #equestrian#dressage

He is SUCH a gorgeous boy!! I have such a fondness for Arabian horses b/c I worked at a boarding barn w/lots of badly-trained/high-energy warmblood show jumpers, & one beautifully trained & incredibly sweet Arabian. He was always such a relief to work with 😂

A friend send me this horrifying tiktok of "breeds of horses you characters should ride" in a fantasy setting and I want to DIE because it's so badly off the mark. Commentary in the alt text.

"Breeds of horses your characters should ride: part 1 Fantasy" superimposed over Arwen from the Peter Jackson film Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. She is riding an Iberian horse.
"A Friesian for a wealthy, medieval warrior character" superimposed over a Fresian horse. This is a breed that historically has had many colors but experienced a number of bottlenecks and now is "all black" with very few white markings allowed. They still have the recessive extension in the population so every now and then a red Friesian pops out. Please do not make your medieval warrior character ride a Friesian unless you are trying to be satirical and ironic. This breed of horse was developed as a cart horse, has cart horse movement, and a cart horse build. They're fancy carriage horses with a slippery slope slide of a back.
"An Andalusian for a wealthy, royal European type character" superimposed over a greying Andalusian horse with the big cresty neck. This is like... marginally okay but also this type of horse is very specifically an Iberian horse. It isn't a destrier type, not really. If you look at how they're used, they were developed in Iberica as very nimble guerilla mounts in the mountains of the peninsula. Monks living in the mountains actually managed to preserve some of the oldest types of Iberian horses, which are really cool. And in Portugal their Iberian type, the Lusitano, actually was instrumental in keeping the Roman Empire from ever fully conquering their people. How they trained and kept sharp their war horses was by testing them against bulls -- which is where the tradition of modern bullfighting comes from. This is not the Knight In Shining Armor horse, this is light cavalry for skirmishing.
"A Holsteiner for a poorer, common European type of character" superimposed over a bay Warmblood horse lifting in the canter gait. This is really... not a medieval horse type at all. The Warmblood as we know it is very much a modern construct with specific ties to Nazis and Olympic sport, and I recommend... just not going there. They're also MASSIVE horses and it doesn't make sense for a poor person to have such a huge horse. They're going to have to house and feed that sucker! Why would you do that? Give them a pony! Something scruffy and ugly and functional and hardy -- something whose metabolic efficiency says "Yeah I survived the famine once, I'll do it again!"

Speaking from experience, the true potential steppe warlords are, unquestionably, horse girls. If civilization ever falls, I guarantee a woman named Kayleigh riding a warmblood named My Sweet Belle will carve a trail of devastation across North America of the likes none have ever seen.

The best thing about riding an incredibly wide warmblood was that it was impossible for him to buck me off. 😂 And he sure did try!
