2024 has become the most deadly year for channel crossings. These deaths are avoidable. We absolutely know policies focused on enforcement just the situation worse. They lead to more people being forced into individual boats. We need safer and simpler routes. www.bbc.com/news/article...

My last “watch Ludwig!” skeet for a while, but, one of many many things I’ve loved about Ludwig is that it is nice to see that v familiar “the detective is a genius who is a bit shy, a bit socially awkward, perhaps on the spectrum”, but where the detective is kind and polite.

It was great to watch Coots quietly going about their business at a local nature reserve recently, so much so I was inspired to pick up my paint brushes! I haven't used watercolours in a while so it's a bit experimental. I hope you like it! 😊 🪶 #birds#birdart#art#ukbirding#ukwildlife#painting

A watercolour painting of a Coot.. a medium sized black bodied water bird with a distinctive white 'shield' above a white beak and bright red eyes. The painting shows one Coot who was sitting on the edge of the pond; backward facing with sun light hitting his left side, his head turned to the right, not fully, but enough to show his shield, beak and one red eye visible, as he glanced around. The bank is sandy with grasses in the foreground; in the background washes in shades of greys, greens and light blues, depict the pond scenery around him.

We stayed in the Alston Youth Hostel when we walked the Isaac Tea Trail and it was very friendly and comfortable.

Bertrand Russell knew how to talk to fascists.

A letter from Bertrand Russell to British fascist Oswald Mosely, refusing to debate him. The letter reads:

Dear Sir Oswald,

Thank you for your letter and for your enclosures. I have given some thought to our recent correspondence. It is always difficult to decide on how to respond to people whose ethos is so alien and, in fact, repellent to one’s own. It is not that I take exception to the general points made by you but that every ounce of my energy has been devoted to an active opposition to cruel bigotry, compulsive violence, and the sadistic persecution which has characterised the philosophy and practice of fascism.

I feel obliged to say that the emotional universes we inhabit are so distinct, and in deepest ways opposed, that nothing fruitful or sincere could ever emerge from association between us.

I should like you to understand the intensity of this conviction on my part. It is not out of any attempt to be rude that I say this but because of all that I value in human experience and human achievement.

Yours sincerely,

Bertrand Russell

every change that causes a new Twitter exodus seems to have one thing in common: making it more toxic Bluesky isn’t perfect, but it really is a nicer place to be, and the best thing we can do for all of us is keep it that way there aren’t any specific rules here - but, if you can, be kind
